These are the well-known Nutritional Supplements that help with depression:

* St John's Wort - actually proven in clinical trials.
* Omega-3 - fish oil is just good brain food.
* SAM-e - prescribed in Europe for more than twenty years.

And of course, the non-medicinal alternatives are best:
* Exercise - preferably in the morning. It regulates your sleep and helps your body deal with stress.
* Exposure to light - especially in the winter.

DHEA works well for midlife depression, as it replaces hormones that are lower in older people.

St John's Wort has many drug interactions, so be careful.

SAM-e is very expensive.

I used to suffer from depression for a very long time. And I need to warn you that psychiatrists are only there to put you on medicine, which is ok if that is what you want, but you should know some facts. Antidepressants can be useful for some people, but the truth is it can take years to find the right medicine or combo of meds that work, because everyone reacts differently to them. And they can help for awhile and get you through the really bad times, but they are not usually meant to be taken for a lifetime. Eventually your body adjusts to the medicine so it may not work as well, or it can stop working at all. And then you have to try to find a new one, which can take time, and can be very overwhelming & frustrating.

I suggest you see your doctor, but also try looking into therapy first. Cognital behavioral therapy is usually the best for people who suffer from depression, it's more interactive than just talking/venting. And if you can, do your best to exercise as often as you can, it is a natural way to help lift depression by releasing endorphins in your body. Yoga is also known to help relieve depression.

If you have tried everything without much help, I'd suggest you might want to give hypnosis a try, it just might work for you. I recently recommended a friend to a website to download and listen to this hypnosis treatment for her depression. She was a little bit overweight and didn't want to take medicine because of the potential weight gain and the side effects... the hypnosis helped her during the hardest time in her life and she certainly has a brighter view of her life now.

Take a look at http://www.commondepression.com

Just remember, try not to resort to medicine as much as possible, I can tell you from many years of personal experience that they are not a quick fix, there is no such thing as a magical "happy" pill.

Good luck, I hope you find the right help.

Moderate exercise for at least 20 - 30 minutes, daily, and up to an hour. Brisk walking is good, and try to be mindful of the feeling your foot makes as it hits the ground: it is a relaxation technique. Also use daily, one of the relaxation methods in sections 2, 2.c, 2.i, or 11, and/or yoga, Tai Chi, and/or the EFT, in sections 2.q, 2.o, and section 53, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris whichever works best for you. Screening quizzes for depression are via page E, in section 1, or page J, in section 2. If positive, print, and consult a doctor, to eliminate medical causes, and ask for an appropriate referral.

Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily: (certified free of mercury) it is best if consumed with an antioxidant, such as an orange, or grapefruit, or their FRESHLY SQUEEZED juice. If vitamin E is added, it should be certified as being 100% from natural sources, or it may be synthetic: avoid it. Also take a vitamin B complex which is certified as being 100% of natural origin; a deficiency in vitamin B9 (folic acid, or folate) is known to cause depression. Around 30% - 40% of depressed people have low vitamin B12 levels. Depressed females using the contraceptive pill may benefit from vitamin B6 supplements.

Occupational therapy (keeping busy allows little time for unproductive introspection, and keeps mental activity out of less desirable areas of the brain). As options, if desired, either a known, effective herbal remedy, such as St. John's wort, (a German variety, if possible; local ones may vary in efficacy; take with a meal) or supplements, such as SAMe, or Inositol (from vitamin and health food stores, some supermarkets, or mail order: view section 55 at ezy-build ).

Initially, at least, some form of counselling, preferably either Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavio(u)ral Therapy. Co-counselling is shown in the first 3 pages of section 2, or online therapy, or even talking with someone you feel comfortable with,
