Should freedom of speech protect the liar without restricting the type of lies?

Who protects the victim? How about satire and parody?

After Jerry Falwell won a $200,000 decision for "emotional distress" in a $40 million libel lawsuit against Larry Flynt, Flynt took the case all the way to the Supreme Court at a cost of $3 million. Flynt won in the Supreme Court, where they decided that the parody of a public figure was protected under the 1st Amendment despite being "doubtless gross and repugnant" and designed to inflict emotional distress.

In the end, it appears that lies which are believable may be subject to libel, but lies which are not believable can be construed as satire.
